The U.S. Department of Agriculture is testing a new rabies vaccine on wildlife in West Virginia.

The USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services Wildlife Services program distributed approximately 80,000 oral rabies vaccination in southeastern West Virginia. The September distribution of the vaccine is the first time the product has been field tested in the United States. Canadian-made, the product is designed to vaccinate racoons and striped skunks against rabies.

The bait has been proven to be effective in foxes, coyotes and raccoons.
