Veterinary staff greeting client in feline-only waiting area.

Thirty-nine percent of cat owners say they would only take their cats to the veterinarian if the cat was sick, notes the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). Given that there are 89 million owned cats, that's a lot of cats without veterinary care.

AAFP hopes to change that, including on April 20, at 7:30 a.m. EST, when it brings its message to an episode of Innovations with Ed Begley, Jr. on The Discovery Channel.

The segment will examine how the AAFP focuses on educating cat owners to increase their understanding of feline behavior, how to reduce the stress of the veterinary visit including prior to arrival at the clinic, the value of routine veterinary care, and the need to actively participate in their cats’ individual healthcare plan.

AAFP will also share information on its Cat Friendly Practice® Program (CFP), which provides veterinary professionals with the tools to integrate a feline perspective and embrace the standards needed to elevate care for cats.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring this important information to our viewers," said Michele Nehls, Producer for the series. “Cat lovers around the world will be amazed by the cutting-edge feline-friendly advancements the AAFP’s Cat Friendly Practice® program provides.”

A sneak peak of the show is currently available for cat owners and veterinary professionals who want to learn more about how to boost care for their feline companions and patients. A poster is also available for veterinary practices to share with feline clients.

Immediately afterwards, the show will be available to viewDates and times of additional broadcast airings of the episode are not yet set.
