Guide to buying kennels and the advantages of different run configurations

Adding or updating containment space?  The following guide can assist with initial decisions when buying kennels and provides the advantages of different run configurations available in the market.

Initial Floor Decisions: A raised-floor run system is the best option if drains are not available in the facility.  Advantages of raised-floor systems include cross-contamination prevention and an increase in boarding space due to narrower panels. (In the instance where 1”tube frame side panels are utilized.)

Should a floor run system be chosen, the advantages include utilizing existing side and back walls, easy configuration, and the availability of custom sizes .

Gate Option Decisions:  Doors can be created in tempered glass, stainless steel and sliding options. Tempered glass is aesthetically pleasing, provides full-view observation and can reduce noise. Stainless steel doors provide improved airflow, and a sturdy appearance that does not show dirt and smudges as readily. The advantages of sliding doors include one-hand operation and maximized kennel space due to eliminating the need for “swing door” space.  A sliding door can also provide improved animal handling since the gate moves left to right instead of toward the caregiver.

If side and back panels are desired, stainless steel or FRP panels are available in a variety of colors and are easy to configure. Installing manufactured side and back panels provides 4’ of isolation and 2’ bars in the upper portion which improves airflow throughout the run.

Considering all of these initial decisions prior to purchase will help maximize workflow while achieving the look, functionality and flexibility you desire for your clinic and patients.
