Workers' compensation coverage provides medical payments, disability, survivor benefits, rehabilitation expenses, and wage replacement for employees who experience job-related injuries or diseases, regardless of fault. No matter how safe and secure you believe your practice to be, conducting business without the support of a workers’ compensation policy is both dangerous and risky. Veterinary practices filed the following five workers’ compensation claims with The Hartford, one of the primary insurance carriers for the AAHA Business Insurance Program. Collectively, these claims totaled more than $100,000.

  1. Employee A was petting a large dog in the practice lobby and was preparing to bring him back for a procedure. Despite being muzzled, the dog was still able to bite Employee A on the forearm, causing a large wound. Due to the severity of the wound, surgery and post-operative treatments were required and Employee A attained legal representation and sought permanent disability benefits. All in all, the practice’s workers’ compensation policy paid $33,000 to cover the costs of Employee A’s medical treatment and an additional $12,000 once the employee was awarded permanent partial disability.
  2. Employee B was chasing a loose pet and slipped and fell in a puddle of urine. The fall resulted in injuries to Employee B’s knee, back, and buttocks, including a torn meniscus that required surgical repair. Following post-operative therapies, the insurance carrier paid $26,000 to cover medical expenses and post-surgery treatments.
  3. Employee C was attempting to restrain an aggressive dog by placing a blanket over its head. The dog turned around and bit Employee C’s index finger, causing a puncture wound near the nail bed and an avulsion fracture. Employee C required surgery to reset the fracture in addition to post-operative therapy. The workers’ compensation policy paid $21,000 to cover Employee C’s medical expenses, disability award, and various legal fees.
  4. Employee D was assisting with an exam and was asked to muzzle a cat. The cat turned and bit the employee’s thumb. Though the bite initially seemed benign, the wound became infected. Employee D was admitted to the hospital for surgery to have the wound cleaned out. Following post-operative treatments, Employee D returned to work and the insurance carrier paid $19,000 to cover the medical expenses.
  5. Employee F was administering medication to a dog and was bitten on the hand. The puncture wound became infected, and the employee was sent to the hospital for surgery and IV antibiotics. Following treatment, physical therapy was prescribed to improve the employee’s injury-induced range of motion loss. Once Employee F was released from care, the insurance carrier paid $13,000 to cover their medical expenses.
