What would your employees say about the culture in your practice? Ideally, you’d want them to provide glowing reviews, but have you created the environment for a great culture? Good culture doesn’t happen on its own; it needs to be cultivated. When you don’t influence culture to create the environment you desire in your practice, chaos can happen and you’ll be left wondering where it all went wrong.

After a long day of learning, the attendees of the Veterinary Management Institute® (VMI) relaxed and socialized on a brewery tour at Odell Brewing Company. As beers were sipped, they got much more than a tour, they got to see great company culture in action.

There are a lot of breweries in Colorado and beer is mostly made the same way, so what is different about Odell Brewing Company? It’s the culture. You can see it in every employee you meet—from the tap room to the production facilities—they have a passion for beer.

The tour guide was one of the happiest and most positive people as she led us through the brew room, around the barrels, and into the bottling area. She told the group about the process of making the beer, but that wasn’t what made her shine. Her glow came from being truly passionate about her product and company. She talked about the employees sampling beers together and how the barrels impart different flavors and how they monitor that throughout the process. But it was when she mentioned that the brewery is now employee owned that she became really animated and excited. Every employee has a part in making the brewery successful and it’s that culture that makes a great workplace.

In your practice, does your team have a passion for all that your practice does? Hopefully they do, but if you need a little help, there are many companies you can learn from in this article—10 Examples of Companies With Fantastic Cultures. Plus, you can learn more about influencing culture in your veterinary practice at the Veterinary Management Institute, starting in February 2016. Find out more at aaha.org/vmi
