The VALUE in your AAHA membership

Help us help you realize the value of AAHA.

At the AAHA Phoenix 2013 Yearly Conference, I spoke about the value associated with your AAHA membership. To get the message to those who were unable to attend the conference, we thought a follow-up blog post was appropriate.

Did you know that member dues fund just a third of AAHA's budget and the work AAHA does to support its members and the profession? To pay for important initiatives like Partners for Healthy Pets, the Pet Nutrition Alliance, AAHA's various guidelines, research, and much more, AAHA relies on "non-dues revenue" from continuing education, conference, advertising, sponsorships, book sales, and our Preferred Provider Programs.

So let's talk for a moment about our Preferred Provider Programs. We have 10 at this point, and many more providers who would love to have this status. Alas, we are very picky. We keep AAHA member interests and benefit front-of-mind at all times. Selecting partners who will be reliable resources for your practice is priority one.

Our two most popular programs are used by 70 and 87 percent of our practices. After that, the penetration drops to just 2 to 13 percent. If the penetration of those less used programs was anywhere near that of our most popular programs, our members would realize greater benefit and the significantly increased non-dues revenue would provide us with more money to invest back into programs to help our members, our students, and our profession.

All we ask is that you consider our programs. If your existing program is a better deal, go for it. If ours are equal or better, use the AAHA programs. By doing so, you win, AAHA wins, and the profession wins. And, your increased use gives us the ability to negotiate even better deals on your behalf. With more than 5,500 members, AAHA could easily be the largest buying group in our industry.

Is there value in AAHA membership? Absolutely. Let us help you realize that value.

When Dr. Cavanaugh talked about the preferred provider program at the member breakfast, I decided to check with our bank, Wells Fargo.  We already have all our accounts with them, and after talking to their provider program specialist, he determined that we could have saved $10,000.00 last year (2012).  This absolutely floored me.  Needless to say, we signed up with preferred provider program.

My hospital has been an AAHA member for 3 years now, but I'm really having some trouble seeing the value of the membership and probably won't renew this year.  I wanted to be up to a higher standard, but was also hoping AAHA would provide useful business tools in return - that hasn't happened.  Neither I nor any of my clients have ever seen any of AAHA's supposed national campaign to show the quality of hospitals in their organization.  In fact, none of my clients have any idea what AAHA even is.  Many of the AAHA publications I've purchased are dated and inaccurate with the times.  I get better prices through regular vendors than through any AAHA preferred provider I've tried, and no one from AAHA ever contacts me for anything except a dues invoice.  Very discouraging.
