This morning, AAHA-accredited member Aubrey Lavizzo, DVM, along with seven other Denver-area veterinarians, leave for Kenya where they will work with the Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) in rabies vaccination clinics. The group expects to vaccinate 1,500 community dogs and cats against rabies. They will also take part in topical animal welfare discussions with veterinarians and Kenyatta University faculty members and help to remove the wire traps used by poachers in the area.

Lavizzo is a 1970 Tuskegee University graduate and owner of the Denver companion animal practice, The Center for Animal Wellness. Throughout his more than 40-year career, he has given much of his time to community service projects that educate pet owners and help animals and people in need, including the elderly and homeless. He has also been a frequent speaker at local elementary schools, where he engages the children in fun exercises that teach them how to be safe around dogs.

When asked why he volunteered to spend 2 weeks in Kenya (in less than ideal conditions) working with ANAW, he said that it is simply an extension of his community service. His life philosophy is best stated in a quote by English author Albert Pine, who said, "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal."

Please join Lavizzo here, on his "road to immortality," as he blogs about his experiences in Kenya.
