It is 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25 at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where the entire group is on safari and I am hearing the vocalizations of what I believe is an unusually large animal at the waterhole a hundred yards from my tent, but I do not care to identify it at this time. Also, something smaller and not vocalizing is scratching slightly at my tent, but again, I am content not knowing what kind of animal it is at the moment. On the road to the conservancy, we saw a cheetah hunting and another cheetah eating her prey. She was about 50 yards from the vehicle. Oh yes, and there was this rather large animal about 150 yards off the road, which someone identified as an elephant of enormous proportion.

This has been an incredibly rewarding experience for the eight of us veterinarians and support here. In two vaccination clinics, we have vaccinated more than 1,200 dogs and cats and we have one or two more clinics left on Tuesday and Wednesday. In my 43 years as a companion animal veterinarian, my work has never been as rewarding or as meaningful as it has been in the last few days.

Here are a few photos I've taken along the way.

Uh-oh! Something is scratching at my tent again. Until next time!
