Each year during the Virginia Veterinary Conference, the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA) and Virginia Association of Licensed Veterinary Technicians (VALVT) award two $500 scholarships to outstanding veterinary technician students.

One of these scholarships was recently awarded to Sara Adcock, a 2016 graduate of the Distance Education Veterinary Technology Program (DEVTP), administered by AAHA and Cedar Valley College. It was the first time a student of an online education program has received this honor.

Adcock’s mentor, Kristy Broaddus, described her as a “strong leader … with the ability to wear many hats in a practice, succeed in all positions, and build trust with pet owners.”

“She is a true honor to the field of veterinary medicine,” Broaddus said.

Adcock said veterinary medicine is her passion in life, and she thoroughly enjoyed her experience with DEVTP.

“DEVTP has been a great way to set a firm foundation for my veterinary career,” she said. “The flexibility of taking classes while working with patients has been my favorite part. It's so helpful to be able to back up the concepts I'm learning in class with hands-on opportunities at work.”

Adcock passed her board exams at the end of March and currently works in the surgery department at AAHA-accredited Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center in Richmond, Virginia, where she is excited to continue her career as an anesthesia technician.

VVMA and VALVT were pleased to be able to award such an outstanding student and promising technician with a 2016 VVMA/VALVT scholarship.
