Communication tools may help uncover pet owner concerns, allowing veterinarians to offer effective, proven, and reliable solutions to address identified needs. Choosing the right tools can help build trust with the owner, providing veterinarians the opportunity to nurture the human-animal bond for the pet and owner.

Marty Becker, DVM, adjunct professor at Washington State University, describes one tool in his communication strategy. “I send a questionnaire in advance of appointments to gain understanding around any health or behavioral concerns the owner has for their pet.” Collecting information in advance allows him to target his talking points in preparation for his scheduled appointment.
