Session 1: “Are you Smarter than a Specialist?”

10:00 am–11:00 am Eastern time

What happens when you ask a dentist...about dermatology? Watch and play along virtually as veterinary specialists compete to see how well they know the pathologies and treatment plans for discrete ailments in areas such as emergency care, epidemiology, dentistry, and dermatology. You’ll walk away with refreshers on the things your practice consults specialists for most, presented in a fun, fast-paced, game show format.

  1. Identify common ailments and pathologies encountered by veterinary specialists.
  2. Describe treatment plans for discrete ailments.
  3. Understand the value of specialty medical knowledge for general practice.

Session 2: Now, Near, Far—Staffing Your Practice With Longevity in Mind

11:00 am–12:00 pm Eastern time

AAHA consistently hears from members that it’s incredibly hard to find and keep dedicated staff at their practices. Between shortages in available candidates and attrition due to unhappy work environments, it may seem like a dream to have a staff of “lifers.” We want to help that dream come to fruition.

In this session, a panel of experts will share insights into successful hiring procedures and tips for making your practice a desirable place to work. We’re not only talking about HR and specialized consultants, but also practitioners who have wildly successful teams with little attrition.

We’ve split this session into three parts:

  • Now: How to find the right staff today, and ideas for improving practice culture so they’ll want to stay.
  • Near: How to recruit from recent veterinary and technician schools and stand out from others looking to do the same.
  • Far: Suggestions for inspiring passion for the field among “the youths” (as they call them in My Cousin Vinny). The discussion might cover how to use internship opportunities, job shadow days, or school career days.

Throughout this session, we will also crowdsource ideas from our audience in the chat. We want this to be a collective learning opportunity, and are excited by the opportunity to foster connections and reflection from everyone involved.

  1. Utilize new resources for finding qualified staff members.
  2. Understand qualities in successful practices that help prevent staff attrition.
  3. Identify outreach opportunities for recent graduates of veterinary education programs.
  4. Create a mentoring, internship, or job shadow program to introduce young people to veterinary medicine.

Session 3: The Great Debate—Should Technicians Unionize?

12:00 pm–1:00 pm Eastern time

We embark on this heated topic by acknowledging that we as a profession must find ways to make veterinary technician (and other paraprofessional) careers viable and sustainable.

Our experts will debate the pros and cons of technicians unionizing as a means of gaining an advocating body, which would institute guidelines for paraprofessional pay, benefits, and other considerations that might improve overall contentedness and drive to remain in the profession.

AAHA is absolutely not taking a stance in this debate. Simply, we want to hear what experts and our audience have to say. This isn’t a trial in a court of law, and some attendees will likely leave no closer to a final opinion. But we do hope they leave with a better idea of what sits at the heart of the debate, and that they discover actionable steps for how they can support technicians using the resources available.

When and where is May virtual Connexity?

May's virtual sessions will occur on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 10am to 1pm Eastern Time (8am to 11am Mountain) on a virtual platform called Matchbox. Access information will be provided to registrants via email.

Can I earn CE from May Connexity?

Yes! May's virtual sessions are currently pending RACE-approval for 1 medical and 2 non-medical hours.

What is the cost of May Connexity?

May Connexity is absolutely FREE! You may choose to make an optional donation to BlackDVM Network if you would like.

Who can register for May Connexity?

Anyone can register! All practice role types, all AAHA membership types, and nonmembers are welcome.

How long will registration for May Connexity be open?

Registration for May Connexity is open now and will stay open until the day of the meeting. Please note that nonmembers will need to create a free AAHA account (if you don't already have one) to complete registration.

Will May Connexity be available on-demand?

Yes, May Connexity's virtual sessions will be available as an on-demand option. Attendees must register to access sessions on-demand after the meeting. Quizzes will be added, which registrants must complete to receive CE credit for on demand sessions.

Will there be a Facebook Group available for May Connexity attendees?

Yes. A Facebook Group has been created for this meeting. It will also serve as the Facebook Group for September and November 2021 events. Attendees will receive a link to the Group upon registration.

How do I access the May Connexity virtual platform?

After registering for the meeting at aaha.org/connexity, all attendees will receive a registration confirmation email prompting them to create a separate account on Matchbox (our virtual platform) to access the meeting; only an email address and self-selected password are required.
