Serious Play: A New Approach to Better Communication in Veterinary Practice

This workshop introduces fundamental improvisation exercises to help build the competencies for better communication and teamwork. We will split into small-group play sessions followed by full-group debriefs so everyone benefits from the learning experiences of all.

Beth Hagenlocker, DVM

A veterinarian in private practice and industry for over 20 years, Dr. Hagenlocker has developed a communication style that is based in improvisation, an unscripted performing art involving agreement, active listening, and collaboration. She co-founded The Detroit Creativity Project, a nonprofit that teaches improvisation to youth and educators. The organization's flagship program, The Improv Project, is the focus of a three-year University of Michigan study into using improvisation to overcome anxiety. Dr. Hagenlocker recently co-authored a chapter for Applied Improvisation on using improv for social and emotional learning. She is the only veterinary graduate to date of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's applied improv training program that incorporates improv techniques into medical communication.

 

Jaime Moyer

Jaime Moyer is an alum of The Second City-Detroit who currently resides in Los Angeles and is a member of the acting unions SAG-AFTRA and AEA. She has taught improvisation (and performed) all over the country, including workshops at Washington Improv Theater, Dallas Comedy House, Asheville Improv Collective, The Arcade Theater, Go! Comedy, Dosage Improv Workshops, Unscrewed Theater, The Siren Theater, Planet Ant Theater, The Second City, Camp Improv Utopia, Angel Comedy in the UK, ICC Theatre in Denmark, and many others. Jaime has also facilitated corporate workshops and been an instructor with The Second City since 2002. Jaime was awarded the sole prize of Maestro at The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas, in 2011.
