OCCI Approved Hospitals

Level 2 and 3 Courses and OCCI-Approved Hospitals

In order to complete the required AVMA tasks and gain hands-on experience, students are required to either intern or work in a veterinary facility for course levels 2 and 3 for the VTHZ program (original program) and for intermediate and advanced level courses for the VTHT program (new program). Students work with an OCCI-approved hospital. In order for a clinic to be approved, students must submit documentation and photos for facilities that are not AAHA-accredited, or documents with proof of accreditation in lieu of photos for any facility that is AAHA-accredited.

Students must complete and submit an OCCI packet at least six weeks prior to the start of the semester. The approval process can take upwards of 4-6 weeks (longer during peak times) once the packet has been submitted, so it's in students' best interest to start the process early. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to disclose hospitals that have already been approved. Once approved, you will be emailed an approval letter with an OCCI number; you will need that number to proceed with registration.

Students do not have the option of coming to the Cedar Valley College campus to complete any hands-on tasks for courses that require hands-on skills except for students enrolled in VTHT 2325. Students without access to large animals have the option of attending a fast track lab, in which they complete all large animal tasks in two days. For courses that require an approved clinic, students must have and maintain access to an OCCI-approved hospital for the entire semester they are enrolled in those courses. Students who change clinics during the semester must notify their instructor immediately in writing, and verify that the new clinic is approved.
