Euthanasia Guidelines Revised

AVMA Issues Revised Euthanasia Guidelines

Revised euthanasia guidelines from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have been cited by consumer groups in debates over the constitutionality of lethal injections for prison inmates.

Despite the media attention, the document does not pertain to people and the changes are minor, say AVMA spokespeople. Revisions include explanatory information regarding process and new verbiage regarding use of maceration for the euthanasia of chicks, poults, and pipped eggs, said Gail Golab, PhD, DVM, interim director of the AVMAs animal welfare division.

The document is available online. It will be revised every 10 years to reflect suggestions from a panel of scientists.
