Don’t forget to give a little extra love to your veterinary technicians this week, Oct. 10-16, in honor of National Veterinary Technician Week. This years theme is "Hands-On Healing." In 1993, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA)declared the third week in October as a time to mark and appreciate the work that technicians do.

"Often we get caught up in our day-to-day activities and forget to take time to really evaluate the important role we play in the profession," said NAVTA President Denise Mikita, CVT. "This week offers a chance for veterinary technician professionals to reexamine collective and individual goals and to recognize colleagues for their dedication to their work. It’s also a time to revisit the technician oath and renew the passion for this field."

Mikita, who is also the executive director of the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CACVT), said the profession is one of the top 10 fastest growing professions in the country. She said the technician profession will continue to evolve in the coming years.

"One area of advancement is in that of veterinary technician specialists. Just like the veterinarian counterpart, technicians will continue to gain advanced education in specific areas to better aid the veterinarian," Mikita said. "In addition, technicians must better support their state and national associations. These are the groups that help promote and provide resources necessary to advance the profession. More can be done when people combine their efforts rather than working alone."
