Singapore newspaper enters the pet obituary market

With options for grieving pet owners including holding funerals and forming diamonds from animals' ashes, it was only a matter of time until the pet obituary entered the picture.

The Strait Times, Singapore’s largest newspaper, recently announced it would let pet owners memorialize their departed friends with a printed obituary and photo in the paper’s classified section, according to NYDailyNews.com.

The pet obituaries will cost $40.96 each in addition to a 7 percent goods and services tax, the news outlet reported.

While pet obituaries might seem like a hard sell in many countries, the conditions are right in Singapore for the idea to take hold.

According to NYDailyNews.com, Singapore has a wealthy population base combined with a shrinking birth rate. These factors have produced an aging population that treats pets like family and has a lot of money to spend on expensive pet food, services, and accessories.
