Pet foods recalled due to suspected salmonella, aflatoxin contamination

News reports have been filled with pet food recalls over the past week, with several manufacturers voluntarily pulling their products from store shelves due to safety concerns.

To keep you updated on the latest recalls, NEWStat has compiled the following list detailing several companies that have recently issued voluntary recalls:

Kasel Associated Industries
Kasel Associated Industries, which recalled several products over the past year, expanded its list to include more than 50 products. The company is recalling all products made at its Denver facility from April 20 to September 20, 2012, due to the risk of salmonella contamination. Products manufactured by Kasel are distributed by many major retailers nationwide including Target, Sam's Club, Costco, and Petco.

According to, Kasel’s voluntary recall came after the FDA threatened the company with a mandatory recall due to at least two inspections that found health issues at the company’s manufacturing facility in Denver.

Hy-Vee is recalling six products because tests uncovered elevated levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring chemical produced by the mold fungus Aspergillus. According to a Hy-Vee news release, the affected products were distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin between Oct. 26, 2012, and Jan, 11, 2013.

Nutri-Vet, LLC
Nutri-Vet, LLC, is voluntarily recalling its Nutri-Vet and Nutripet chicken jerky products due to possible salmonella contamination. The recalled chicken jerky treats were distributed nationwide through online sales and in retail stores from April 2012 through February 2013 with Best By dates ranging from April 20, 2014, through October 3, 2014, the company said in a news release.

The Honest Kitchen
The Honest Kitchen is pulling five lots of its Verve, Zeal, and Thrive pet food products off shelves because of a potential salmonella risk. The products were produced between August and November 2012, and sold after August 2012 in the United States and Canada via mail order, online ordering, and retail stores.
