Veterinary supply manufacturer Med-Vet announced that it is recalling 140 boxes of 1/2cc U-40 insulin syringes due to mislabeled syringe barrels.

According to the company's news release on the FDA website, the recalled syringes were labeled with 40 units per 1/2cc syringe. The correct labeling should have read 20 units per 1/2cc.

The error could lead animals to receive less insulin than they need, resulting in possible hyperglycemia, the company said.

How to identify the recalled syringes

Med-Vet reported that the recalled insulin syringes are the 1/2cc insulin syringe U-40 with 29g x 1/2" needle, featuring the lot number 20120610. They also have the item number MV1/2CCINS or 1/2CCINS-40 by Oasis.

The syringes were manufactured in May 2012 and distributed from January 2013 to February 2014. Recipients included animal hospitals, animal shelters, veterinarians, farmers, and consumers.

Directions for those possessing the recalled product

The manufacturer advised anyone in possession of the recalled syringes to quarantine the products. Med-Vet also specified that recipients who passed any recalled product to other people should notify those customers and advise them to quarantine the product.
