False story circulating regarding recall of Iams, Eukanuba pet foods
Those who regularly watch for pet food recalls should take note of a false rumor spreading through the news media about a recent recall by the Procter & Gamble Co.
A story circulating through the media reports that more than 30 varieties of dry dog and cat food from the Eukanuba and Iams brands are being recalled due to salmonella concerns.
What the news coverage fails to mention is that the recall currently being reported actually occurred in August 2013, reports the Dog World website.
According to Dog World, Julie Hearsey, of Eukanuba’s breeder team, said, "Please let us reassure people that there is currently no recall of our Eukanuba and Iams products in any country. The information swirling around social media at the moment refers to a recall which occurred back in August 2013 and was limited to North America only. This was a voluntary recall, made as a precautionary measure, and concerned only a small number of batches of dry food produced on a single production line at one of our U.S. plants."
The AVMA also downplayed the recall story on its AVMA Recall Watch twitter account, writing: "Web rumors of an Iams/Eukanuba recall are FALSE. There is no current recall on Iams/Eukanuba products."
