In 2015, 58% of cats and 53% of dogs were identified as overweight, according to the 2015 National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). Has that number risen? Here’s your chance to help find out.

APOP is conducting its annual pet obesity survey on Oct. 12, Pet Obesity Awareness Day, or any day in October, to determine the number of pets in the United States that are overweight.

APOP is asking veterinary clinics to record information for each pet the practice performs a routine exam on in October. Completed information is due to APOP by Nov. 7.

Information to be recorded includes pet name, sex, age, breed, number of cats or dogs in the household, weight, body condition scoring system, and previous medical conditions.

Participating practices can register on the APOP website. Practices that submit up a minimum of 20 study pets will receive an entry into a drawing for a FREE iPad Mini.
