Skewer-swallowing dog wins Hambone Award®

A Persian cat who ate three feet of packaging tape. A miniature dachshund that fended off a rattlesnake. A skewer-swallowing boxer. It was a tough choice but the votes are in. On Oct. 7, Nationwide Pet Insurance awarded Curtis, a five year old boxer from Princeton, W. Va., the Hambone Award®, honoring the most unusual pet insurance claim of the year. Curtis will receive the award and a gift bag. The Virginia College of Veterinary Medicine, who treated Curtis, will receive $10,000 to treat pets whose owners could not otherwise afford treatment.

Veterinarians treat sea turtles with fibropapillomatosis

Green sea turtles, once listed as an endangered species, are rebounding in record numbers today in Florida but now face a new threat: fibropapillomatosis (FP), reported Phys.org. One AAHA-accredited hospital is helping. Doug Mader, DVM, of AAHA-accredited practice Marathon Veterinary Hospital (MVH), along with five other veterinarians from MVH, volunteer at the Turtle Hospital, a rescue and rehabilitation hospital for sea turtles in the Florida Keys.

Study: We’re finding new feline viruses faster than we can figure them out

Things are moving fast in the world of feline pathogens. The authors of a recent review article in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery say “the rate at which novel [or previously unknown] viruses are being discovered now exceeds our understanding of their clinical relevance.” And it’s not just happening to cats: A 2008 paper in Nature described the discovery of 335 infectious diseases in the global human population between 1940 and 2004.
