Expedition rediscovers wild dogs thought to be extinct

The Highland Wild Dog (HWD) is the most ancient canid currently living, serving as a sort of “missing link” between the first early canids and the modern domestic dog. HWDs hadn’t been seen since the 1950s, and some researchers feared they had gone extinct from loss of habitat and contamination with nearby village dogs.

Microchip reunites dog with owner after 9 years

Gigi, the toy poodle, went missing over nine years ago after a home burglary. In early December, Reba Hunter found her wandering around Roseville, Calif., and decided to take her to her veterinarian at AAHA-accredited Citrus Heights Animal Hospital. Hunter knew the dog needed to be treated and hoped that she could potentially take her home as a new pet.

Top pet Halloween costumes announced

If you plan to include your pet in the Halloween festivities, you’re not alone. In fact, 16 percent of consumers plan to dress their pets in costumes this year, and 86 percent already know what that costume will be, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). The NRF conducted its 2016 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey on Sept. 6-13, and 6,791 consumers responded, sharing their Halloween costume plans for their pets. The pumpkin, hot dog, and bumble bee topped the list.

Prehistoric canine graves suggest dogs were hunting companions

Hunting season began this month and prehistoric canine graves suggest that dogs, like many human hunters, have an ancient hunting legacy. A researcher from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany studied 110 dog burials in prehistoric Japan and concluded that dogs were valued as ideal hunting companions and may have been critical to human survival, reported Science Magazine. The study was published online in Antiquity, a journal of Cambridge University Press, on Sept. 15.
