AAHA announces 2016 award winners

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) awarded the seventh annual AAHA-Accredited Practice of the Year Awards during the AAHA yearly conference’s Opening Session on March 31. Pembroke Animal Hospital of Ontario, Canada took home first place for the general practice category. MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets-Cincinnati of Fairfax, Ohio was awarded first place for the referral practice category.

Ohio becomes second state to accept AAHA accreditation in lieu of state inspection

Accreditation represents a standard of care, and access to “best practices,” clients can trust. And state agencies are recognizing that, first in Alabama and now, most recently, in Ohio. As of March 2015, 106 veterinary hospitals in Ohio were exempt from state inspection due to their AAHA-accredited status. This makes Ohio the second state to accept accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in place of a state inspection, this time by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board (OVMLB).

Innovative canine prostate cancer treatment yields success

Fourteen percent of men will develop prostate cancer. Ninety-nine percent of them will survive, thanks to treatment advances. And now, male canines with the same condition can take advantage of one of those advances. The University of California at Davis (UC Davis) is conducting a clinical trial to evaluate a new prostate cancer procedure similar to one in human medicine known as prostatic transarterial embolization. Unlike other prostate cancer therapies, this one is minimally invasive.

Study reveals possible biological trigger for canine bone cancer

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) have identified the biological mechanism that may give some cancer cells the ability to form tumors in dogs. The findings, published in the journal Veterinary and Comparative Oncology on Feb. 16, may eventually provide oncologists with another target for therapy and improve outcomes for canine patients with the disease.
