General principles and patient assessment

The assessment of patient history, chief complaint, and physical exam findings will determine the need for additional testing and fluid therapy. Assess for the following three types of fluid disturbances:

Fluids for maintenance and replacement

Whether administered either during anesthesia or to a sick patient, fluid therapy often begins with the  maintenance rate , which is the amount of fluid estimated to maintain normal patient fluid balance.
