Entrepreneurs bring the future to pet health care

A flash-dissolving pill that cats literally cant refuse. A soft chew that turns hairballs into, well, poop. A biofilm buster that kills bacteria by destroying their environment. Patented molds used to build organotypic cell clusters to create species-specific 3-D miniature organs for transplant into companion animals to cure diabetes.   At the Animal Health Investment Forum in Kansas City on August 28, future of companion animal medicine arrived. Partnership launches new preventive health program

Move over, preventable diseases: A new player is joining the fight for preventive pet health. The Partnership for Preventive Pet Healthcare is announcing its plans to rollout Partners for Healthy Pets, a program designed to provide support for the veterinary healthcare team. The group plans to officially unveil the new program at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) convention in August. The Partners for Healthy Pets program is a result of the collaborative efforts of Partnership members to emphasize preventive pet health. The Partnership is an alliance of more than 20 leading veterinary associations and animal health companies committed to a vision of improved overall health for pets. Members include the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the AVMA, and other industry leaders and associations. In light of declining veterinary visits and statistics showing an increase in chronic conditions, these organizations have teamed up to ensure that pets receive the care they need. In early May 2012, Banfield released its 2012 State of Pet Health Report. The report showed that chronic conditions, especially obesity, are on the rise across the United States over the past five years. According to the Banfield report, overweight pets and obesity, arthritis, kidney disease, thyroid disease, and heart disease are all on the rise.

Domestic violence shelter offers safe haven for pets

A Great Dane who protected his owner from being beaten to death with a hammer by her boyfriend has inspired a family violence agency to be the second in the country to offer a pet shelter for furry victims of domestic violence. In June, the Paws Place pet shelter in Kansas City, Mo. began providing protection to pets of families living at the Rose Brooks Center’s emergency shelter. The new pet shelter can provide safety for up to eight family pets each night, according to information from Rose Brooks. "Rose Brooks believes in family," said Susan Miller, Rose Brooks Center CEO. "Our work every day is to keep families safe and help them rebuild their lives. And pets are part of that family too. Weve simply redefined what family means to us." The Paws Place pet shelter was inspired by a woman and her Great Dane, "Hank", who suffered two broken ribs and a fractured hip when he protected the woman from domestic abuse. The dog crawled onto the woman’s back to protect her from being beaten to death with a hammer by her boyfriend. The boyfriend then turned on Hank, dragging the seriously injured dog into a busy street and leaving him there.

Partners for Healthy Pets plans to launch a variety of tools and resources designed to promote preventive care visits to the clinic while providing the veterinary healthcare team with skills to make visits more valuable. The group calls its program "The Opportunity", which it describes as a chance to close the lack of understanding between pet owner and veterinary professionals by improving pet owner understanding of preventive care.
