The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is proud to announce the 2016 recipients of the AAHA Awards for Proficiency in Primary Care. This award is presented in recognition of fourth-year AAHA student members who have shown outstanding clinical proficiency in primary care. AAHA worked with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges' (AAVMC) Winners Primary Care Veterinary Educators to recognize the winners' achievements.

Feline hyperthyroidism (FHT), also called thyrotoxicosis, affects mostly middle-aged and older cats. It is caused by increased production of thyroid hormones from enlarged thyroid glands in the cat's neck, according to Cornell University. A new set of guidelines and related client materials hopes to better treat this disease. On May 3, the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) published “The Guidelines for the Management of Feline Hyperthyroidism” (Guidelines) in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.

Spring is in the air and so, too, are parasite-transmitted diseases. What can you expect in your area? Luckily, there’s information available to answer that question. On April 18, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) released its 2016 Parasite Forecasts. An online, interactive zip-code searchable map is also available so that veterinary practices can monitor the prevalence of parasites in their area, and share that information with clients. The information is also available in the free CAPC iTunes App.

A key requirement for veterinary licensure in the United States and Canada is the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE®), which reflects the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed by entry-level veterinarians. Now, a carefully selected sample of veterinarians in practice have the opportunity to help build the foundation for the NAVLE® to ensure that it accurately assesses entry-level competencies. The Collaboration for Veterinary Assessments, consisting of the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME) and National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), launched the initial wave of the practice analysis survey in the United States on April 18.

Nearly one in ten U.S. veterinarians may suffer from serious psychological distress, and more than one in six may have considered suicide since graduation, according to a 2015 study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). For some, that difficult journey began in veterinary school. A group of veterinary students hopes to change that. The Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) has published a series of YouTube videos, entitled It’s OK, to encourage conversation about the mental health challenges veterinary students face. The project was launched March 21.

AAHA welcomed three new officers and two new directors to the AAHA Board of Directors at its annual meeting during the 2016 AAHA Yearly Conference in Austin, Texas last weekend. Nancy Soares, VMD, is AAHA's 2016-2017 president; Mark McConnell, BVMS, MRCVS, is AAHA's new president-elect, and Darren Taul, DVM, is AAHA's new vice president. New directors include P. Adam Hechko, DVM, and Caroline West Lubeck, DVM.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) awarded the seventh annual AAHA-Accredited Practice of the Year Awards during the AAHA yearly conference’s Opening Session on March 31. Pembroke Animal Hospital of Ontario, Canada took home first place for the general practice category. MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets-Cincinnati of Fairfax, Ohio was awarded first place for the referral practice category.

The AAHA Austin 2016 Yearly Conference begins Thursday, March 31, and it is shaping up to be one of AAHA’s best conferences yet. AAHA plans to release several announcements during the conference’s Opening Session ceremony on Thursday. “We have some exciting announcements to share with our members and the veterinary industry in Austin,” said Michael Cavanaugh, DVM, DABVP (C/F), chief executive officer of AAHA.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is proud to announce Heather Loenser, DVM as the 2016 recipient of the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA)’s annual Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award. Loenser is AAHA’s staff Veterinary Advisor for Professional and Public Affairs. The APPA and PIDA named Loenser the 2016 recipient of the award in December 2015. Loenser accepted the award March 17, 2016 in Orlando, Fla. at The Purina® Media Reception at Global Pet Expo.
