World’s most successful mitral valve repair surgeon to teach his technique in the US

Open-heart mitral valve repair on dogs is a tricky procedure at best, and the usual success rate is 60% to 75%, depending on the dog’s size, age, heart status, and overall health at the time of surgery. Japanese cardiologist Masami Uechi, DVM, can boast a success rate of 90%. Soon, he'll be teaching US veterinarians how he does it.

FDA ends nicotine study on primates after 4 monkeys die

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last Friday that they were ending a controversial experiment on nicotine addiction. The experiment involved having adolescent squirrel monkeys self-administer doses of nicotine until they were addicted so scientists could study the effects. The study began in 2014. Yakima implemented a pit bull ban in 1987 after a series of pit bull attacks, including one where a senior citizen attacked in his wheelchair died of his injuries.
