Resources and ways to help those impacted by Hurricanes Milton and Helene
Help is available to those impacted by recent hurricanes, and there are many ways to pitch into hurricane relief efforts.
When hurricanes make landfall, they cause chaos for everyone, including pets, their owners, animal shelters, and veterinary clinics. In recent weeks, residents in various states have dealt with not one, but two major hurricanes and the many disruptions that accompany them.
First, Hurricane Helene left at least 230 people dead after making landfall on Sept. 26, impacting six states. The cost of the storm is estimated to top $250 billion. Hurricane Milton hit the Florida coast on Oct. 9 as a Category 3 hurricane with winds topping 120 miles per hour. Millions are without power and the damage from the storm is still being assessed in Florida. With the widespread damage caused by Hurricanes Milton and Helene, we have compiled a list of ways you can donate to those living and working in the impacted areas.
Be aware
It is important to note that during times of disaster, there are people and groups that try to scam both hurricane victims and people looking to donate money or resources. It is important to verify the organization’s legitimacy though sites like the Better Business Bureau and Charity Watch.
Relief efforts
The ASPCA has $1 million in grants available to help those who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. To learn more, check out the 2024 ASPCA Hurricane Response & Relief Grants Initiative.
The Humane Society has a fund that helps animals during emergency situations. As of Oct. 10, their team noted that they are “rushing to help transport animals in shelters to safety as Hurricane Milton makes landfall. While we do this, our team is still working to help in the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Helene.”
The Salvation Army has ways to donate online and also keeps a list of service locations that they update regularly.
Both the American Red Cross and United Way have disaster relief funds focused on helping those impacted.
If you’re looking for ways to help children impacted, the Baby2Baby Disaster Relief and Emergency Fund and the Save the Children’s Emergency Fund are both four-star charities on Charity Navigator.
