Two pet food companies - Natura Pet Products and Jones Natural Chews Co. - recently announced voluntary recalls of some of their products due to salmonella health risks.

Natura Pet Products recall

Major pet food manufacturer Natura Pet Products announced a large-scale voluntary recall involving dry pet foods from four of its brands: California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, and Innova.

According to the company’s recall notice, a routine inspection at a single retail location by the Michigan Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of salmonella.

The recalled products feature expiration dates ranging from 12/17/2013 – 1/2/2014, and were distributed between December 18, 2012 and March 15, 2013, according to Natura Pet Products. The recall does not affect other dry food, canned food, biscuits, bars or treats that are not listed by the company in the recall notice.

According to Natura Pet Produts, the affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica.

Jones Natural Chews recall

Jones Natural Chews, based in Rockford, Ill., has voluntarily recalled 245 of Woofers beef patties due to potential salmonella contamination.

According to a recall notice from the company, the salmonella risk was detected during a routine inspection by the Colorado Department of Agriculture Feed Program.

The Jones Natural Chews Woofers were shipped to distributors and retailers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin between Nov. 1, 2012, and Nov. 12, 2012, the company reported.

The company identified the following products as being affected by the recall:

• Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) bulk 50-count box, Item UPC 741956008169, Lot 2962GPS-Best By 10/22/15, and Lot 2892PAL-Best By 10/15/15. Woofers in bulk 50-count boxes may be sold individually. 
• Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 1 pack shrink-wrap, 50-count box, Item UPC 741956008657, Lot 3102, Best By 11/05/15.
• Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 1 pack shrink-wrap, 50-count box, Item UPC 741956008183, Lot 2892BF - Best By 10/15/15, Lot 2962PWV - Best By 10/22/15, Lot 2962ASC - Best By 10/22/15, and Lot 3032ASL - Best By 10/29/15.
• Jones Natural Chews Co Woofers (beef patties) 2pack shrink-wrap, 25-count box, item UPC 741956008190, Lot 2962ASC - Best By 10/22/15 and Lot 3032ASL - Best By 10/29/15.

The company encouraged consumers to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund, and to call 1-877-481-2663 with any questions.
