Veterinary industry groups have released an updated financial framework intended to standardize how independent practices track and interpret their business performance. The revised VMG/AAHA Chart of Accounts, developed by Veterinary Management Groups and the American Animal Hospital Association, aims to provide a more consistent structure for categorizing revenue and expenses across veterinary clinics.
The VMG/AAHA Chart of Accounts has long served as a common system for organizing financial data in small-animal practices, enabling clearer comparisons between clinics and more reliable benchmarking.
However, earlier versions did not fully reflect the operational complexity of modern veterinary businesses, which often combine clinical services, retail, and ancillary offerings under one roof.
The updated version introduces revised categories and definitions designed to align more closely with current practice models. By improving consistency in financial reporting, the framework is intended to help practice owners and managers better evaluate performance, identify inefficiencies, and make more informed strategic decisions.
The revision was developed with input from multiple veterinary organizations and subject-matter experts, reflecting a broader push within the profession toward standardized financial data. Such standardization is considered essential for meaningful benchmarking, allowing practices to compare performance on an “apples-to-apples” basis and better understand industry trends.
Supporting materials and guidance have also been released to help practices adopt the updated system.
