In a release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Methimazole Coated Tablets have been approved for treating hyperthyroidism in cats. The FDA said in the release that these tablets are only available via prescription from licensed veterinarians and that cats taking the drug should be continuously monitored for progression of the disease, and to ensure their drug dosage is appropriate.
Officials with the FDA also mention in the release that while other “generic” methimazole tablets have been marketed online, Methimazole Coated Tablets, sponsored by Felix Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. Based in Ireland, are the only ones with FDA approval. The manufacturer also stated that this generic drug has been determined to be bioequivalent to Felimazole (methimazole coated tablets, Dechra).
According to the FDA, Methimazole Coated Tablets are available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg for oral administration. They should be dosed in 2.5 mg increments every 12 hours, with dose adjustments also made in 2.5 mg increments. The maximum total dosage is 20 mg per day divided, not to exceed 10 mg as a single administration..
Those administering Methimazole Coated Tablets should wash their hands with soap and water after handing the tablets to avoid drug exposure.
