March is Pet Poison Awareness Month, and in this episode of From the Soapbox, we talk with Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, veterinarian, director of veterinary medicine, and senior veterinary toxicologist at the Pet Poison Helpline, about the most common and surprising toxins affecting pets today.

Schmid shares insights from the Pet Poison Helpline about the calls they’re receiving most often and the emerging toxicity risks we’re starting to learn about. We discuss familiar dangers like chocolate and lilies, along with newer concerns including JAK inhibitor medications such as Apoquel and Zenrelia, as well as similar human medications that may be found in the home.

The conversation also highlights unusual but increasingly reported cases, including acrylamide toxicity from gel migraine or headache masks that dogs sometimes chew open.
