RECALL: Neogen®Vet HYCOAT® Hyaluronate Sodium Sterile Solution
Neogen Corporation is voluntarily recalling all lots within expiry of Neogen®Vet HYCOAT® Hyaluronate Sodium Sterile Solution, for use in dogs, cats, and horses, due to microbial contamination.

A topical wound care solution for dogs, cats, and horses is being recalled due to microbial contamination.
The makers of Neogen®Vet HYCOAT® Hyaluronate Sodium Sterile Solution issued the voluntary recall of all lots of HYCOAT within expiry in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall was issued after the company received several adverse event reports related to the product. The problems that were reported to Neogen were all related to off-label use of the product, according to a company statement. The international biotech firm said in a press release that they “received a number of reports of adverse events in horses following intraarticular injections of this product, which is inconsistent with its labeled, intended use.”
Since HYCOAT is meant as a wound management product, any microbial contamination could lead to infection, especially if it is injected directly into the bloodstream.
The company said it has not received reports of adverse events related to the intended use of the product. HYCOAT is a veterinary-use, sterile liquid solution for dogs, cats, and horses. It is meant to be applied topically to wounds, burns, ulcers, or autograft procedure sites, then covered with a non-adherent dressing.
While HYCOAT is labeled as a sterile solution, the company stressed that “due to microbial contamination of certain lots, the recalled lots should no longer be considered sterile.”

No other Neogen products are affected by this field action.
