Throughout my career, I’ve been privileged to witness and contribute to the extraordinary evolution of veterinary medicine. This field is undergoing a remarkable transformation, shaped by technological advancements, a greater understanding of the human-animal bond, and a commitment to improving accessibility and outcomes. Reflecting on this journey, I’m inspired by the opportunities to provide more personalized, compassionate, and innovative care.
Preventive care and tech in the future of veterinary medicine
Preventive care has become central to modern veterinary medicine, and its impact has been profound. Tools like genetic testing, wearable technology, and advanced diagnostics have enabled me to craft tailored care plans that address the unique needs of each pet. Introducing affordable wellness plans has further expanded access to routine care, helping families provide essential health services for their beloved companions. Seeing pets thrive and their owners relieved by proactive care highlights the transformative power of prevention.
At the same time, technological advancements have redefined what’s possible in veterinary practice. Innovations such as 3D imaging, digital radiology, and AI-enhanced diagnostics have revolutionized how we diagnose and treat patients, allowing for more precise and effective care. Telemedicine has been particularly impactful, providing access to veterinary expertise in remote areas and offering timely solutions for pet owners who might otherwise face barriers to care.
Advocacy in veterinary medicine

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work has been advocating for credentialed veterinary technicians (CVTs). By elevating their roles and collaborating on the 2023 AAHA Technician Utilization Guidelines, I’ve seen the profession grow in recognition and importance. Empowering CVTs has not only improved the efficiency of veterinary practices but also enhanced the quality of care, allowing veterinarians to focus on complex cases while ensuring every pet receives the attention they deserve.
The future of veterinary medicine: broadening our scope
Veterinary medicine isn’t solely about physical health; it’s about addressing the emotional needs of clients and staff as well. My daughter Courtney, with her expertise in social work, has introduced a program to help pet owners navigate grief and loss, bringing an invaluable dimension to our practice. Supporting my team through wellness initiatives has also been essential, fostering a healthier, more compassionate environment for everyone involved.
Expanding surgical and rehabilitation services has been another significant focus in my journey. By offering advanced orthopedic surgery and physical therapy, we’ve improved recovery outcomes and enhanced the quality of life for pets in our care. These services have positioned my practice as a leader in innovative, community-focused care.
Beyond the clinic
Community engagement has always been at the heart of what I do. Hosting educational events and using social media to share pet health resources have strengthened bonds with our clients, fostering trust and loyalty. These connections remind me of the vital role veterinarians play not only as caregivers but as educators and advocates.
Sustainability and ethics are guiding principles in my work. Adopting ecofriendly practices and prioritizing equitable access to care reflects my commitment to aligning veterinary medicine with the values of the communities we serve. Combining this approach with thoughtful business strategies has allowed me to grow my practice while maintaining a focus on compassionate, patient-centered care.
As veterinary medicine continues to advance, I’m honored to contribute to its progress. The journey has been defined by innovation, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of pets and their families. I’m excited to see how we, as a profession, will continue to shape the future of care.
