Podcasts

2/5: Margaret Spalletta

Today’s episode of From the SOAP Box features Margaret Spalletta, a registered veterinary technician and practice consultant manager here at AAHA, and an advocate for AAHA’s End of Life Care (EOLC) accreditation program. This episode dives into what the EOLC accreditation looks like, and which types of practices can benefit from it.  She also shared some examples of how teams can learn more about end-of-life care through AAHA’s End of Life Care certificate program and educational opportunities offered by other leading end-of-life care organizations.

2/19: Kim Johnson

Later this month, From the SOAP Box will feature Kim Johnson, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), a veterinary oncologist and co-chair of the 2026 AAHA Oncology Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. She is also the author of Positive Purrspectives: The heART of Healing, a book promoting wellbeing and resilience among veterinary professionals.

This episode will discuss the new oncology guidelines and why it was important to make them a resource to help general practice veterinary teams guide patients and their families through cancer diagnosis, treatment decisions, and referral coordination.

Other topics covered include the importance of having workflows and other tools that remove some of the stress associated with arriving at a diagnosis and having sensitive discussions with clients about their pet’s prognosis with a focus on compassion. And of course, we made sure to save some time to talk about her book as well and her inspiration for writing it: making sure veterinary medicine is a sustainable career path through a combination of individual resilience training and collective work to make the workplaces and systems in which we move healthy and supportive.
