In this opinion piece, read why the AAHA Veterinary Management Institute offers academic insight, cohort learning, and other opportunities for growth in vet med.

When I think about the AAHA Veterinary Management Institute (VMI), I can’t help but smile. It’s not just a program; it’s a journey, an adventure, and honestly, one of the best experiences I’ve ever been a part of in my career. Let me share why VMI holds such a special place in my heart.

 A collaborative academic environment

First and foremost, the collaboration with Colorado State University is incredible. CSU brings a level of academic excellence that’s unparalleled and combining that with the expertise of AAHA creates something truly magical. It’s a powerhouse partnership that sets the stage for success.

What really makes VMI stand out is the people. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with veterinary professionals who are just as passionate about this field as I am. Together, we dive into essential topics like practice management, culture, communication, and innovation. These aren’t just buzzwords; they’re the building blocks of a thriving veterinary practice.

According to Judy Rose: "The best part about VMI being virtual is that puppy and kitty snuggles are always welcomed."

Learning opportunities galore!

And let’s talk about the content! The speakers we get to learn from are the best of the best. Seriously, every session feels like a masterclass. You’re not just listening to theories; you’re gaining practical tools and insights that you can implement immediately. The convenience of the program is another bonus. One weekend morning a month? Yes, please! It’s the perfect balance of learning and flexibility.

One of my favorite parts of VMI is the cohort dynamic. Not only do we learn from the speakers, but we also learn from each other. The feedback and ideas exchanged in this community are invaluable. I’ve seen cohort members collaborate, share successes, and support each other long after the program ends. It’s inspiring to see how everyone’s unique experiences enrich the group.

The feedback we get from past attendees is another reason I’m so passionate about VMI. Hearing about their success stories never gets old. One attendee told me they gained the confidence to join their VMA’s board of directors. Another said VMI inspired them to pursue a degree in HR. One practice owner shared how they used what they learned to create a financial plan and add a fourth exam room to their clinic. These stories are proof of the program’s impact, and they remind me why I love what I do.

The AAHA Veterinary Management Institute: Write your own story

As a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM), this program is incredibly meaningful to me. It’s common to hear someone say at the end of the program that they’re sad it’s over, and honestly, I feel the same way every time. VMI is more than just a program; it’s a support system, and a launchpad for amazing things.

If you’ve ever considered joining, do it. You’ll learn, grow, and connect in ways you never expected. And who knows? Maybe one day I’ll run into you at a conference, and you’ll have your own incredible VMI story to share.
