Despite being busy than ever, AAHA-member practices managed to take time out on July 22, AAHA-Accredited Practice Day, to celebrate their AAHA-accreditation in person and on social media.

Step into any veterinary clinic post-COVID, and you will notice a theme: long wait times, overextended staff, and more patients and appointments than ever before. While we aren’t dealing with the annoyance of curbside as much, we are still trying to wrestle with the sheer increase in patients needing to be seen. In larger cities such as Philadelphia and Boston, the number of patients needing to be seen has increased beyond the demand of staff.

“Mentorship has been around along as veterinary medicine,” said Addie Reinhard, DVM, MS. But she thinks the definition is shifting.

It’s been good year for AAHA—thanks to our member hospitals.

Seventy-five percent of employees have stolen from their employer at least once, according to the US Chamber of Commerce. And sadly, veterinary staff are no exception—in a 2010 AAHA survey of AAHA-accredited practices, 86% of respondents reported that employees had stolen from the business.

“It looked like the sky was falling,” says Charles Hurty, DVM. He was talking about the skies over Newport, Oregon in September 2020, when out-of-control wildfires ravished the surrounding old growth forests and rained ash and grit over much of the Pacific Northwest. But he could have been talking about COVID-19.
