AAHA releases new publication to help veterinary practices achieve economic success through preventive care

LAKEWOOD, Colorado – September 9, 2020 –The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is pleased to announce the release of a new publication, Preventive Care Protocols and Practice Economics, which was developed with the support of an educational grant from IDEXX.

“We are thrilled to develop and share this new resource with the veterinary community,” said AAHA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Janice Trumpeter, DVM. “This publication will benefit patients, clients, and veterinary practices by improving communication about the value of preventive care.”

The business landscape for veterinarians has continued to evolve over recent years, and practices industry-wide have worked to find new ways to support practice growth while providing pets with the care they deserve. These challenging times are no different. Practices need to adapt in order to continue providing the best medicine and most compassionate treatments to the animals in their care.

This new publication builds upon two previous documents, Implementing Preventive Care Protocols, published in 2019 and Promoting Preventive Care Protocols: Evidence, Enactment, and Economics, released in 2018. It takes a deeper look at the business opportunity for preventive-care testing and provides practical ideas, pricing strategies, and client-communication strategies to help gain client compliance, while providing tips from veterinary teams that have made it work.

“Our clients trust us to do all that we can to ensure their pets are as healthy as possible,” said Adam Hechko, DVM, owner of the North Royalton Animal Hospital in Ohio. “Adding comprehensive preventive care protocols to our routine visits will help veterinarians strengthen relationships with clients, while supporting increased growth and profitability of the hospital.”

The medical case for preventive care is clear: Regular diagnostic testing—even performed on healthy animals—may reveal underlying conditions, catch disease sooner, and support longer, healthier patient lives. Preventive care also supports ethical economic growth for practices, something that is essential for practice sustainability in any economic climate. With this publication, veterinarians will learn how—and why—to price preventive care in a way that works to drive real compliance from clients.
