Choosing the right Kong®

The iconic red KONG® Classic has delivered countless tail wags and happy memories since 1976. It is the foundation of KONG enrichment toys. Every dog is unique, which is why we offer a range of toys of varying rubber strengths, sizes, and styles for every dog’s needs.

KONG rubber colors and strength

The color of a KONG rubber toy isn’t just for looks—it signals durability and helps match the toy to a dog’s life stage or chewing style. Here’s a simple breakdown of what each color means.

Pink and blue

KONG® Puppy toys, made from pink and blue rubber, are designed for puppies 9 months and younger, as well as light chewers. The gentler rubber is tailored for developing mouths and helps teach appropriate chewing habits.

When stuffed and frozen, KONG Puppy toys can soothe teething discomfort and help extend playtime, making them especially helpful for crate training or managing puppy energy.

Purple

Senior dogs still benefit from daily play, and the KONG® Senior—made from softer purple rubber—is built for gentle chewers and aging dogs who may have sensitive mouths or missing teeth.

This version helps keep older pups mentally sharp and physically active while still being comfortable while chewing. It offers the familiar KONG challenge with a gentler feel for dogs in their golden years.

Fun fact- our Kitty KONGs are made of the same rubber! Fill them with some kibble and hide them around the home to tap into a cat’s natural hunting and foraging instincts.

Red

The KONG Classic, made from the well-known red rubber formula, has been a favorite for nearly 50 years. This natural rubber blend is durable enough for most adult dogs and creates an unpredictable bounce that encourages active play.

Red KONG toys are ideal for average chewers and are great for stuffing or freezing to provide extra mental stimulation and enrichment.

Black

For dogs who need maximum durability, the KONG® Extreme line uses the toughest KONG rubber—black. These toys are made for power chewers who typically destroy other toys quickly.

Black KONG toys can also be stuffed and frozen to create a longer-lasting challenge that satisfies strong chewing instincts.

Choosing the right size

KONGs come in six sizes to accommodate dogs of all sizes. While weight ranges can serve as a general guideline, choosing the right size KONG is more about a dog’s head size and chewing tendencies.

When selecting a size, consider the dog’s mouth and jaw size. The widest part of the KONG should be larger than the back of the dog’s mouth.

In multi-dog households, it’s safest to size toys for the largest dog. When a dog is in between sizes or you are unsure, it’s always recommended to size up.

Choosing the right KONG color/strength and size ensures safe, engaging, and appropriate play for every dog.
