Meet Emily Merry, a recently graduated emergency and general practice veterinarian, co-founder and veterinary content specialist at Scribenote, podcaster, and social media content creator. Her main goal in creating her content is to reach veterinary students and recent graduates to let them know they are not alone, especially if they feel overwhelmed or unsure of themselves in their clinical studies and work. Her content is a combination of funny videos, cute animals, heartfelt confessions, and inspiration for anyone who wants to be part of her community. She has also started a podcast, Hot Vet Mess, where she takes a deeper dive on topics relevant to working as a new grad in vet med. “Being a new grad vet is no joke, and it can feel very isolating and overwhelming,” she said. “I wanted to create a space where people could come together, feel heard and supported and know that we are all in this together.”

Listen up! Welcome to Veterinary Voices, a monthly feature dedicated to spotlighting inspiring veterinary professionals and thought leaders who are speaking up and making waves.  Join us as we amplify their stories, share their insights, and celebrate the diverse voices shaping the future of veterinary medicine.  No matter your role in veterinary medicine, there’s something valuable to discover in the journeys of these influential figures.

As a new grad, Merry understands how hard it can be to feel confident in managing cases in veterinary practice. “Right now heading into each appointment feels like climbing a steep mountain with no idea what you will find at the top,” she said. “Imposter syndrome has hit me hard for the first time this year and every time I make a mistake I feel extremely defeated.”

To combat these feelings of uncertainty and create community for others who may feel similarly, Merry has taken a bold approach of sharing her experiences online to highlight the challenges of being a new grad, help others know they are not alone, and even get guidance and reassurance from other veterinary professionals.

“Luckily, I have an amazing support system…but I know that not everyone is as fortunate,” she said. “Everyone deserves to have a community of people supporting them cheering them on or at the very least a space where they can come and rant about their day or their cases or a difficult interaction and have peers hear them and support them in the best way we can.”
