HAB-py tails: How pets impact our kids, relationships, and more
There’s nothing quite like a touching example of the human-animal bond to remind folks why they went into veterinary medicine. With that in mind, we hope you enjoy this heartwarming round up of stories showcasing just how strong that bond can be.
In a veterinary context, humane education involves intentionally integrating animal welfare, empathetic client communication, and environmental awareness into everyday practice. It is about looking beyond the clinical outcome to consider the broader ethical picture, helping to shape a more compassionate community in the process. And while it’s something you’re probably already practicing every day, understanding what it is and how it can impact your patients, clients, and community can make a big difference.
Volunteering beyond borders: The many ways veterinary professionals can give back
Veterinarians are in a unique position: we possess countless ways to use our knowledge, compassion, and creativity to make a difference in our communities and in the world. And the best part is the more we give, the more we grow.
Esteban Soto, MSc, DVM, PhD, DACVM, DABVP (Fish Practice), CertAqV, professor of Aquatic Animal Health in the Department of Medicine & Epidemiology at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine answers the five questions.
Meet Mariana Pardo, a veterinary emergency and critical care specialist, founder, and social media content creator. While she loves the rush of emergency medicine, she also loves teaching and empowering others so that they can provide care to pets in families in their communities.
Another passion of hers is diversity, equity, and inclusion in veterinary medicine. As a mom, she said she is reminded daily by her children that life is more than work. “Motherhood re-centers me,” she said. “It reminds me of what I’m fighting for: a world that is kinder and more equitable, for them and for every child.”
This inspiration helps to fuel her work advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion within veterinary medicine, particularly to ring more attention to the barriers faced by international, Latinx, and underrepresented veterinarians within the industry.
