Veterinary medicine is losing people at an unsustainable rate. According to Phase 1 of AAHA’s Stay Please retention study, conducted in early 2023, approximately 30% of veterinary professionals say they plan to leave their current jobs. Half of those plan to leave clinical practice completely, and nine out of 10 of those leaving clinical practice say they’ll never come back.
Whether we’re talking about veterinarians, technicians, practice managers, or customer service representatives, the fact is that vet med is often a calling. People are drawn to this work because they love animals. They work in clinical practice because they care—but is that caring nature the very thing that’s making a career they should love an unsustainable choice?
