Originally from Puerto Rico and a graduate of Tuskegee University for her DVM, Aida Vientós-Plotts, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Small Animal Internal Medicine), completed a rotating internship at Auburn University followed by a small animal internal medicine residency, post-doctoral fellowship, and PhD at the University of Missouri (MU).

She joined the MU faculty in 2020 and is currently an assistant professor of small animal internal medicine. In 2022, she co-founded The BREATHE Clinic, a one-of-a-kind subspecialty clinic that operates under the umbrella of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service at the University of Missouri.

BREATHE is an acronym for Bringing Respiration & Aerodigestion Toward Health. The main goal of the BREATHE Clinic is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of dogs and cats with respiratory and swallowing disorders to allow individualized management.

Her interests include investigation of the microbiota in low biomass sites including the respiratory tract and blood, exploration of the link between respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, and bridging knowledge gaps in veterinary pulmonology.

She speaks nationally and internationally on these topics and has written multiple research articles and book chapters. Additionally, Vientós-Plotts is one of the co-founders and currently serves as vice president of the nonprofit organization Veterinarians for Puerto Rico.

Since its inception in 2017, this organization has facilitated nearly 20,000 spay/neuters and vaccinated over 25,000 dogs and cats; it continues to spearhead efforts to help tackle the overpopulation of dogs and cats on the island.

While she wears many hats, her favorites are wife and mama to two little ones. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and organizing.
