Treatable cause of canine megaesophagus identified

Researchers from the University of Missouri's College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Internal Medicine, Radiology, Surgery, and Nutrition services and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery department at the university's School of Medicine have identified a breakthrough treatment for a subpopulation of dogs with Megaesophagus (ME) . They have also identified a defect of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) as a potential treatable cause of ME. An oral abstract was presented on Oct. 20 at the American College of Veterinary Radiation Annual Scientific Conference in Orlando.

Congenital heart defect prompts rare canine heart surgery

Tetralogy of Fallot is a set of four structural heart abnormalities uncommon in dogs and often fatal before the age of one. Called “blue baby syndrome” in humans, the congenital heart defect prevents oxygenated blood from properly circulating through the body. This was the situation for Lilly Rose, a beagle, before she found herself at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CSU-CVMBS), and the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The solution involved two heart operations, one in September 2014 and a second surgery in July.

Puppy receives head injury reconstruction

Puppies can get into trouble and for Ziba, an eight-month-old female Rottweiler, that trouble could have been fatal. She was accidentally hit by a car four months ago. Luckily, despite fractures to her skull and jawbones and concern about brain damage, Ziba got help. The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis (UC-Davis) performed reconstructive maxillofacial surgery on Ziba immediately and last week, announced that the fractures were healing and there was no evidence of implant failure or infection.

Social media leads to saving dogs’ lives

The Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service at the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital performed constructive jaw surgery on three dogs who otherwise might have been euthanized.
