Take Your Cat to the Vet Day is vampire approved

If you can’t convince cat-owning clients to bring their pets in for a visit, maybe Ian Somerhalder can. A telegenic actor best known for his role as a vampire in The CW’s supernatural drama The Vampire Diariesand for being the first major character to be killed off in ABC’s hit series Lost, Somerhalder was recruited by Royal Canin to help promote National Bring Your Cat to the Vet Day, coming up later this month.

Cracking the window won’t help

Parking in the shade on a sunny day won’t necessarily save a pet left in the car from heatstroke, or worse. A new study of temperatures inside parked cars shows that a car parked in the sun would reach lethal temperatures faster than one parked in the shade, but even in a shaded car, heat buildup could prove deadly.

Study: Puppies’ cuteness has a shelf life

If you think they’re cute now, just wait ‘til they’re weaned. A new study published this month in the journal Anthrozoos aimed to determine the peak of puppy cuteness. It found that puppies are most appealing to humans at around six to eight weeks of age. That’s around the same time puppies are weaned from their mothers, and the researchers think that’s no accident.

Veterinarians versus the volcano

As the world’s most active volcano, Kilauea has been erupting almost constantly since 1983.One of five volcanoes that form the actual island of Hawaii, commonly known as the Big Island, it’s been a lot more active since May third, when the first of 18 new fissures opened up, spewing lava hundreds of feet in the air. Since then, a continuous flow of lava has swallowed cars, destroyed at least 25 homes, and forced the evacuation of nearly 2,000 residents. The State of Hawaii has 13 AAHA-accredited animal hospitals, but only two of them call the Big Island home.
