Dog parks: Where pets, people, and parasites collide

Across the United States, dog parks have increased in number by 74% over the past 11 years (Trust for Public Land, 2019), and the number of pet dogs has increased by more than 20 million in the past two decades. Owning dogs can improve physical health and wellbeing. However, congregations of pets and people can increase the risk of contracting pathogens, including parasites.

DOGPARCS study shows parasites are common in recreational canine sites

What has been suspected to be true about dog parks and parasite risks has been quantified. This study assessed the prevalence of these infections in dogs visiting off‑leash dog parks. It is the first large-scale effort to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs visiting dog parks throughout the USA.
