After many months of review, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has revised its position on domestic cat declawing. The revised declawing position statement was approved at a regularly scheduled AAHA Board of Directors meeting in August 2015. The approval came after months of review and revision by the board appointed Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee.

To respond to the avian influenza outbreak, the USDA hopes to fill 210 veterinary technician positions and 90 veterinarian positions this fall, according to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA).

Thanks to the work of the Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation, there is now quantitative research to show what most animal lovers already know: the health benefits and value provided by companion animals. To support this cause and contribute to further research on the benefits of the human-animal bond, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) announced it has joined the HABRI Steering Committee.

Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters annually, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Part of the reason is due to animal behavior issues. That’s where the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and its 2015 AAHA Canine and Feline Behavior Management Guidelines (Guidelines), released in late July, can help.

On July 13, Valbona Lucaj and Sebastiano Quagliata were sentenced to from 57 months to 15 years in prison for the fatal mauling of a jogger last year in Metamora, 45 miles northwest of Detroit. The dogs involved in the incident have since been euthanized and eight puppies seized. Animal Behaviorist and expert witness Suzanne Hetts, PhD, CAAB, CVJ, as well as a JAVMA study, note that such incidents can be prevented.

Accreditation represents a standard of care, and access to “best practices,” clients can trust. And state agencies are recognizing that, first in Alabama and now, most recently, in Ohio. As of March 2015, 106 veterinary hospitals in Ohio were exempt from state inspection due to their AAHA-accredited status. This makes Ohio the second state to accept accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in place of a state inspection, this time by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board (OVMLB).

The use of animals in labs has been a hot topic in the European Union (EU) this year. Infact, one million Europeans signed the Stop Vivisection Initiative, submitted in March to the European Commission. But on June 3, the European Commission rejected that initiative, reported Speaking of Research.

On June 24, the Austin County Grand Jury returned a “No Bill” ruling regarding Kristen Lindsey, DVM, citing insufficient proof to charge the Brenham, Texas veterinarian with a crime for Animal Cruelty. Lindsey, who practiced at Washington Animal Clinic prior to the event, killed a cat with a bow-and-arrow and then posted her “kill” on Facebook in April.

AAHA-accredited practice Kimbrough Animal Hospital, in Longview, Texas was engulfed in flames Tuesday night, reported the Longview News-Journal. Of the 40 pets boarded there, only two survived. There were no human injuries.

As thanks to Stephen H. White, DVM, DABVP, and owner of AAHA-accredited practice Fairway Animal Hospital in Kansas City for caring for her dog, Maddy, McCahon created a scholarship in White’s name. The Dr. Stephen White Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine scholarship was presented to Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (K-State CVM) in March, years after White provided care.
