The 7.8 magnitude quake that hit Nepal on April 25 has impacted 8 million people. The death count is at least 5,500. The injured number 11,000, reports the BBC. This week, search and rescue dogs (SARs) and their handlers have jumped on planes from all over the world in response.

AAFP to boost awareness of need for feline veterinary care

Thirty-nine percent of cat owners say they would only take their cats to the veterinarian if the cat was sick, notes the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). AAFP hopes to change that, including on April 20, at 7:30 a.m. EST, when it brings its message to an episode of Innovations with Ed Begley, Jr. on The Discovery Channel.

New 2015 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats now available

The robust advances in pain management for companion animals underlie the decision of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) to expand on the information provided in the previous 2007 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. The 2015 guidelines, now available, represent a consensus of expert opinions that summarize and offer a discriminating review of new research and knowledge.

AAHA launches new internship and mentorship standards for accredited veterinary hospitals

AAHA is the first major veterinary organization to offer a standards-based platform for establishing successful internship and/or mentorship programs at veterinary hospitals. In fall 2014, the AAHA Board of Directors approved optional standards for accreditation of internship and mentorship programs at accredited veterinary hospitals. To date, 9 hospitals have earned internship accreditation; 14 hospitals have earned mentorship accreditation. Two hospitals have received both internship and mentorship accreditation.
