Link between cat parasite and schizophrenia

FDA releases draft compounding guidance

Historically, when a veterinarian needed to compound drugs from bulk substances to meet a patient’s needs, he was breaking a federal law. Now, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is recognizing the need for that “lawless” act. On May 18, the FDA released Guidance for Industry #230 (GFI #230) on animal drug compounding from bulk drug substances. It also admitted that in limited circumstances, an animal drug compounded from bulk drug substances may be an appropriate treatment option.

Two million illnesses and nearly 23,000 deaths. That’s the annual count in the United States from drug-resistant bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). AVMA Veterinary Debt and Income report paints market picture

When it comes down to how much you can expect to make as a new veterinarian, or whether your income is similar to other veterinarians, context is everything. Veterinarian ophthalmologists correct eyelid agenesis in cat

It started with some research on how to correct eyelid agenesis, a congenital defect that causes patients to be born without upper eyelids. Then came practice on cadaver cats, followed by the real thing: the delicate surgery. This month, the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) reported the success of the corrective surgery, not only for its veterinary ophthalmology team but also for a 9-month-old female domestic shorthair cat named Billie.

Another global vote that animals feel

Is an animal a sentient being, that is, can it feel, perceive, and experience emotions? Many in the veterinary community, including pet owners, would say, “Yes.” New Zealand agrees. Yesterday, New Zealand passed the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill, which brings greater clarity, transparency and enforceability to the country’s animal welfare laws. It also now recognizes animals as sentient beings.
