IAHAIO symposium to focus on animal assisted interventions

The International Organization of Human Animal Interaction Organizations (OHAIO) will hold its annual symposium on animal assisted interventions in Copenhagen May 28-30. The symposium, “Advancing HAI beyond boundaries: Developing our roadmap for the future,” will focus on establishing international standards and best practices for animal welfare in animal assisted interventions (AAI).

New global study quantifies the cost of untreated rabies

A global study on canine rabies, published April 16 in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, estimates that globally canine rabies causes approximately 59,000 human deaths, over 3.7 million disability-adjusted life years (the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability, and early deaths), and $8.6 billion dollars in economic losses annually.

Hill’s 2015 global symposium on pet obesity goes virtual

Hill’s 2015 Global Symposium, traditionally an in-person event, will be available virtually from April 27-June 30. Delegates can also join the physical gathering in Miami, Fla., on April 26-28. The symposium will focus on obesity and the use of nutrition to improve and transform pets’ lives, with a special focus on treating pets that suffer from concurrent conditions.

Veterinarian's bow-and-arrow killing of cat prompts action

Members of the veterinary community, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University (CSU), have issued statements of concern and outrage regarding the bow-and-arrow killing of a cat by veterinarian Kristen Lindsey in Texas last week. Some have also taken remedial steps.

Pet obesity becoming a global issue

Roughly one-third of dog owners visit the drive-through or take out window with their dog(s), and four-fifths of them order something specifically for the dog. That translates to over one billion fast food trips annually when something is being ordered for the dog. So states a study published April 8 by Relevation Research, a market research firm.

Desert tortoise ovariosalpingectomy a success

Last week, the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) announced the full recovery of Tiny Tim, a 40-year-old desert tortoise. The tortoise had undergone an ovariosalpingectomy over a year ago to remove three of six remaining eggs lodged in the tortoise’s reproductive tract.

Supreme Court endorses stronger protection for pregnant workers

On March 25, the Supreme Court revived the lawsuit of a former United Parcel Service (UPS) worker who claimed UPS discriminated against her when she was pregnant, reported the Washington Post. In so doing, the Supreme Court clarified and endorsed stronger legal protections for pregnant workers.

The fall of an Internet veterinary advice service

On March 27, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit rejected Ronald Hines, DVM’s appeal. That appeal challenged the Texas rule that requires veterinarians to conduct patient physical exams before practicing veterinary medicine. The U.S. Court of Appeals found that a Veterinarian-Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) cannot be established solely by telephone or electronic means.
